Airbnb has been rolling out temporary phone numbers for a limited number of users in the U.S. and Canada. According to its Help Center, they are assigned after a booking is confirmed, so neither host nor guest has to share a real number. In an email to hosts this week, Airbnb announced the next step: from October 26, 2026, temporary numbers also apply to connected software such as channel managers and property management systems (PMS). Airbnb gives “increased phishing attempts” as the reason.
Which bookings are affected
According to Airbnb’s email, the change applies to bookings made from October 26 for listings in the U.S. or Canada, when host and guest live in the same country and their phone numbers are registered there. Your software will then only show the guest’s temporary number. For all other bookings, Airbnb asks you to look up the guest’s number on Airbnb.
How the temporary numbers work
- They are active from the booking until two days after checkout. After that, you can only reach each other through Airbnb messages.
- Calls and texts work as usual. WhatsApp does not.
- Caller ID may show “Airbnb guest” or “Airbnb host”.
- Real phone numbers shared in Airbnb messages, emails or listing text may be blocked or replaced with the temporary number.
- The guest phone number shortcut in quick replies has been removed. Existing quick replies that use it will no longer be sent.
- The suggested door code stays: Airbnb still shows the last four digits of the guest’s real phone number in the reservation details.
What does this mean for you?
Smart locks first: if your lock or channel manager creates door codes from the guest’s phone number, check before October 26 which number it will use from now on – a temporary number means different digits. Use Airbnb’s suggested door code or another code system, and test it with a real booking. Update your quick replies and scheduled messages, too.
Keep your cleaning team and co-hosts in the loop: a guest’s number stops working two days after checkout, and WhatsApp won’t work at all. Keep important communication in Airbnb messages so you have a record. That matters if you find damage – document it with photos right after checkout and handle claims through Airbnb, not by text. And because Airbnb names phishing as the reason: never log in, pay or move a guest off Airbnb through a link you get by text or phone.
